[Hakushi KUMAGAIKOH] (1917-1985)
A Japanese dyer in the Showa period.
Hakushi learned Japanese painting under Ryushi Kawabata, and received his art name “Kumagaikoh” from Ryushi. Then he got to produce Edo Yuzen with the methods of Japanese painting, and established his original style that was modern and realistic.
In 1981, Hakushi held “the Exhibition of Wall Paintings with Yuzen” and displayed panels made of Yuzen. He received the Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon in 1981, the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon in 1982, and the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon in 1985. Some of his works are owned by the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Fogg Art Museum of Harvard University.
Hakushi died in 1985, at the age of 67.
