[Omi Jofu]
Omi jofu (designated as Traditional Crafts) is a ramie textile produced in Koto district in Shiga prefecture.
In the Kamakura period (1185-1333), people produced fine ramie textiles and Omi tradesmen brought them all over the country. The craft flourished during the Edo period (1600-1868) with encouragement from the Hikone clan, which ruled the area around Hikone on the southern shores of Lake Biwa, and it became a well established local industry as a result.
