[Echigo Jofu]
A high-class woven ramie fabric produced mainly in Oriya and Tokamachi areas in Nigata prefecture. It is made of hand spun Choma (ramie) threads and woven in a traditional technique, and then bleached in the snow. Echigo jofu with beautiful crinkles(or crepe-like surface) is called “Ojiya Chijimi” or “Echigo Chijimi”.
The traditional weaving technique of Ojiya-chijimi/Echigo-jofu was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Properties of Japan in 1955.
