[ Kamo-yaki ]
Literally "Kamo ware." A style of Japanese pottery created by Masaemon Azuma VI in the town of Kamo, Kyoto.
Kamo-yaki items are made of special clay retrieved from the mountains in Kamo. They have a smooth, pleasant feel to them.

From the Nara period, there has been good porcelain clay in Kamo, Sagara-gun, Kyoto and tiles for roofs were created.
In 1820, the first generation Masaemon established the ceramic roof tiles factory. The 6th generation Masaemon was born in Kamo in 1900 and run his family business for more than 50 years from 16 years old. He was the factory manager and created ceramic roof tiles for famous historical architectures in Kyoto such as Nijojo castle, Daikakuji temple, Kokedera temple and also for the garden tea room at the world expo.
He started pottery as his hobby in his retirement life. He brought special clay from mountain and created tea utensils using his original techniques and methods. He named it “Kamoyaki” and his works which have a pleasant feel are favored by tea masters. He creates chawan, sake cups, incense containers, flower bases and so on.
