[ Yasuoki KUMAGAI]
A Japanese potter. Yasuoki was born in 1940 in Fukuoka prefecture as the 16th generation master of an Agano ware kiln established in the Edo period. After leaving Kanazawa Collage of Art, he refined his skills under Seimei Tsuji, a skilled potter.
Yasuoki has been received many awards since 1970, and held his personal exhibitions in many cities in Japan
, and designated as a Traditional Craftsman in 1984.
[Agano ware]
Agano ware is one style of Japanese ceramics produced in Tagawa district in Fukuoka prefecture.
The history of Agano ware started in the early Edo period, when Tadaoki HOSOKAWA (Japanese samurai warrior also known as a tea master) invited Kizo AGANO, a Korean potter, and established a kiln there.
Agano ware is very thin and light ceramic, and favored by tea masters, as it counted among the best seven kilns selected by Enshu KOBORI (a famous master of tea ceremony). Once Agano ware declined in the Meiji period, however it revived in 1902 and designated the status of Traditional Japanese Craft in 1983 by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.
