[Sometsuke]
Blue and white porcelain. On the surface of biscuit firing pottery, designs are painted with cobalt oxide paint.
Arita ware is the first Sometsuke ceramic in Japan. The Nabeshima kiln made superior sometsuke.
Xiang-Rui is one style of sometsuke made in China around 1628 to 1644. Xiang-Rui style has various geometric patterns drawn with bliliant blue color.
[Otsu-e]
Otus-e is a style of Japanese folk art painted in Otsu city, Shiga prefecture.
Otsu-e were first painted in the early Edo Period (17th century) in Otsu by unknown artists, and they were sold as souvenirs to travelers along the Old Tokaido Highway.
In the very beggining, Otsu-e were sold as religious paintings of Buddah to be hung in the homes of the less wealthy as objects of worship. And later, more motifs such as Oni(goblins), animals and various styles of people are drawn satirically or sententiously.
