[Mumyoui Ware]
One style of Japanese pottery produced in Sado island, Ni'igata prefecture. The first Mumyoui ware was produced in 1819 by Jinpei Ito with mumyoi clay, which contains ferrous oxide, and later Jouzan Miura the first developed new methods such as high-temperature firing to improve its strength. As Mumyoi pottery is fired in a kiln at a high temperature, it becomes exceptionally hard and they produces a clear metallic sound when tapped.
Mumyoui ware was designated as Important Intangible Cultural Property in 2003.
[Sekisui ITO]
A potter in Sado city, Niigata Prefecture. The name has been handed down from the first generation to the present generation, Sekisui V.
Sekisui I established Mumyoi ware, a beautiful vermillion-brown potter produced in Sado city, in the late Edo period, and later generations masters has inherited the techniques of Mumyoi ware.
Sekisui V, the present generation, was born in 1941as a son of Sekisui IV. After leaving the Ceramic course of the Kyoto Institute of Technology, he studied methods of Mumoi ware under his grandfather, Sekisui III, and succeeded the name “Sekisui” in 1976. He succeeded to produce traditional Mumyoi ware adding techniques of ‘yohen (kiln color change)’ and ‘neriage (marble)’ .
In 2003, Mumoi ware was designated as Important Cultural Property and Sekisui V was accredited as Living National Treasure.
