[Kiyonaga TORII] (1752-1815)
An ukiyo-e (wood block print) designer of the Torii school in Edo period. The forth generation master of the Torii School.
He is one of the 6 greatest ukiyo-e artists (Kiyonaga, Harunobu, Utamaro, Sharaku, Hokusai and Hiroshige) who draw portraits of tall beautiful women.
He was the son of an Edo bookseller. His real name was Shinsuke Seki and commonly known as Ichibe. He studied ukiyo-e under Kiyomitsu Torii and designed Torii school style Yakusha-e (a portrait of a Kabuki actor) during Anei era (1772-80). In the 1780s, he produced many great bijin-ga (a portrait of a beautiful women), and he invented the use of larger sheets of paper for bijin-ga. He designed groups of tall women in great proportion against the background of realistic scenery of Edo.
After his master Kiyomitsu’s death, he succeeded the 4th generation master of Torii family in 1787. He created playbooks and picture books in his later years, and died in 1815 at the age of 64. His grave is located in Kaikoin temple in Sumida Ward, Tokyo. His grave had been lost because of earthquake and war, however the Kiyonaga memorial monument was raised to honor his great achievement in the yard of Kaikoin temple n 2013.
