[Yoshimatsu NANBU] (1894-1976)
An engraver of Ise-katgami (Japanese traditional paper stencil for dyeing textiles) . A living national treasure.
Born in Suzuka city, Mie prefecture in 1894, Yoshimatsu got to study the skills of Ise-katgami carving called “tsuki-bori” under his father and older brother, Tokichi Nanbu, soon after leaving elementary school. In addition, he studied technique of Kaiki-silk stencil inYamanashi prefecture. In 1955, Yoshimatsu was designated as a Living National Treasure as a holder of “Isegata Tsuki-bori” technique. Not only a skilled artisan, he was also a great trainer for younger generations. Even after his death in 1976, Yoshimatsu’s ise-katagami has been used to dye textiles.
