[Eisen KEISAI] (1790-1848)
An ukiyo-e (wood block print) designer and a writer in the late Edo period. He is famous for its fascinating bijin-ga (portraits of beautiful women) and shunga（pornographic woodblock prints）/erotic books. In addition, he was a talented landscape artist who produced “The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaidō” which he started and which was completed by Hiroshige Utagawa.
His real name was Nobuyoshi Ikeda, commonly known as Zenjiro. His art name for ukiyo-e was Keisai/ Kokushunro / Hokutei, as a writer he used Kako/ Ippitsuan / Mumeiou and so on.
He was a son of a lower-class samurai in Edo and studied drawing under Hakkeisai Karino then became a discipline of Eizan Kikukawa. He was a talented ukiyo-e artist who established the style of decadent Bijin-ga in the end of Edo period.
As a writer and an illustrator, he produced lots of Shunga (porn woodblock print) and erotic books such as “Hanagumori Haruno Oboroyo (1816)” and “Haruno Usuyuki (1822)” under his secret name including Kako that was given by Hokusai Katsushika.
After the Tempo Reforms (1841-1843), he devoted himself to write Gesaku (the light literature) and essays. He wrote “Mumeio Zuihitsu" under the name of Yoshinobu Ikeda in 1833.
He died in 1848 at the age of 59. His grave is located in Fukujuin temple in Suginami Ward, Tokyo.
