[Akazu Ware]
One style of Seto ware which has been created in Akazu area, Seto city. One of the "Six Old Kilns of Japan”.
The history of Akazu ware started in Heian period and its technique and methods has been succeeded by skillful potters more than 1000 years.
7 kinds of glazes ( ash glaze, iron glaze, Kozeto glaze, Kizeto glaze, Shino glaze, Oribe glaze and Ofuke glaze) and 12 kinds of decoration techniques (craped effect, one done with a potter’s tool, paddling, shaping, a type of faceting, openwork, cloth texturing, a slip decorating technique called mishimate, stamping, combing, sprigging and raised work) has been kept until today and Akazu ware was designated as the traditional crafts of the country in 1977.
As of the year 2015, there are 8 traditional craftsman of Akazu ware.
-Heian Period : Ash glaze appeared in the early Heian period. Development of techniques of stamping/carving with spatula .
- Kamakura Period : Iron glaze and Kozeto glaze appeared. Combing and relieve curving techniques were established.
- Momoyama Period : Appearance of Kizeto, Shno, Oribe glazes. Along the development of tea culture in Japan, Akazu ware potters made tea utensils and other wares with those glazes. Today, Kizeto /Shno/ Oribe glazes are representative glazes of Akazu ware.
- Edo Period : Ofuke glaze was used at Oushu Oniwayaki (a kiln established by the Tokugawa family to create pottery for the Owari clan).
